Home Pelling Tourism

The second most popular tourist destination in Sikkim is the beautiful town of Pelling located in the West district, second only to Gangtok. The view of Khangchendzonga and the surrounding peaks, which can be sighted from a distance of 130 kilometres from Gangtok and 10 km from Geyzing, is the highlight of the place.

Closer than 1 km to here are the famous Pemayangste monastery, which is a hotspot for tourists. Pelling serves as a base for several treks in the region and also has facilities for mountain biking, rock climbing, village tours and meditation. The beautiful town of Pelling is a perfect Pelling cultural expedition for all nature lovers and adventure seekers.

The small hamlet of Pelling, sitting at a height of 6800feet was once upon a time a dense forest full of wild, native creatures like the Wildman (who may not yeti, mind you). This ridge eventually became the village of Pelling because it sits between two ancient Buddhist monasteries — Pemayangtse and Sangacholing. Pelling is currently one of the most popular tourist places in Sikkim. Pelling is the base for touring all of magnificent tourism sights of West Sikkim.

Pelling is a year-round destination that has accommodation options for all budgets. The Khangchendzonga Festival held every year at Pelling is named after Sikkim's protector deity.

When to go to Pelling?

Summer maximum and winter minimum temperates are 25 degrees and 1 degrees, respectively, at 2000 metres. As for in the summer, it is pretty hot and comfortable. The monsoons arrived between July and September. One can visit Pelling throughout the year but avoid a trip during monsoon.

So, following these Dos and Don'ts you can enjoy a nice trip to Pelling.

The DO's

Make sure the monks can meditate undisturbed.

DON'TS

Cut out unnecessary blaring noises.

But do not leave the environment littered.

Where is Pelling located?

Pelling, in western Sikkim, is situated at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. Located about 131 kilometres away from Gangtok and 10 kilometres from Geyzing, the biggest town in Western Sikkim, it is a small hill station.

This robustly made area is right adjacent to the Himalayan and Kanchenjunga mountain ranges, and you will get a good, near view of the mountainhouses. Being less developed than other Sikkim cities, there are more alpine plants here and more waterfalls.

Pelling is the gateway to West Sikkim’s other towns and villages, including Geyzing, Legship and Yuksom. Not to mention, this is where the majority of treks commence so it is an essential place to visit for every adventurer.

And what exactly is the best feature of this place? As Pelling is at a high altitude, it sees snowfall during winter at times adding an ethereal beauty to the area. So if you’ve always wanted to see untracked snow in the mountains, Pelling is where you need to be.

How to reach Pelling

Pelling is slightly trickier to reach than other major cities in Sikkim, if you don’t have your own vehicle. There are no buses that go directly to Pelling, so you must first reach Geyzing (the district administrative centre) before proceeding to this small hill town.
