Insights
At an elevation of 8600 ft above sea level, Lachung is one of the most beautiful places in Sikkim, which is a popular stopover for tourists going to the Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. The picturesque little hamlet has received rightly called one among the most beautiful, mountainous villages of North East India, attracting tons of tourists and nature enthusiasts from all around to its geographical bounty of beautiful fruit orchards, crystal clear brooks and rushing blue rivers that supports the alluring background of snow-covered Himalayas standing high against the blue sky. It is indeed a heaven for those seeking solace away from the chaos and noise and wanting to breathe the fresh air, soak up the stillness of mountains.
A very scenic and trending trekking point called Zero Point (also known as Yumesamdong) offers adventurers some breathtaking views of nature. Well, for travelers who seek some excitement in Lachung, there there also will be no dearth of options for things to enjoy that will help satiate their adrenaline pangs. True adventurers must visit Mt. Katao in order to experience the unrelenting excitement snow-boarding, skiing and snow-tubing. That being said, Mt. Katao needs an Indian Army permit (which is mandatory and solely depend on the weather forecast for that day).
Although Lachung's wealth of tourist places and range of adventure options are the main factors that propel tourism therein, only a few people come to learn more about the unique cultures and customs in the region. The majority of the illage comprises of Lepchas and Bhutias, who are primarily Buddhist followers and still follow their religion with a high regard and respect.
Winter:
From October to February, Lachung remains cool (10°C to -5°C), has misty grey roads, snowfall and a peaceful tranquillity brought about by the still cold air. The village becomes a white wonderland after a snowfall, and the colours of the trees are changed from green to frosty blue. At this time of year, the best outdoor activities and sights are at your disposal without concern about sunburn or dehydration. The wind is cruel, and the sun is gentle.
Monsoon:
Lachung is under heavy rains due to South-West Monsoon. Roads are treacherous, prone to landslides and, in some cases, impassable because of the rain. Hence, visiting Lachung after July till September in Monsoon, it is discouraged to travel. Yet while the little mountain village is bathed in breathtaking landscape, it ruins most outdoor activities.
Summer:
This is a moderate temperature, not unbearably hot, for summer at this elevation. They are thriving between 10°C and 28°C, and this time aroundmost of the fruit orchards have ripe fruits while rhododendrons are in full bloom. The State Tourism Department organizes several festivals and events in tandem with the blooming of rhododendron flowers, so this is a good time to travel.
