The culture of Sikkim is an unique amalgamation of different religions, traditions and cultural practises of different communities. Sikkim has been the abode of three tribes since ancient time, namely, the Lepchas, the Bhutias and the Nepalese. Even today, they are still shaping the people's community and culture in Sikkim. Since Nepalese is the largest ethnic group in Sikkim, Nepali is the most widely spoken language in the state. There are people who have recently moved here from all parts of the country along with many Bengalis, Punjabis and Biharis who have settled here and started travel and construction businesses. So, a blending of many cultures can be seen, but the state has always remained extremely friendly and peaceful.
The state is a beautiful cultural bouquet decorated with stunning folk dances, traditions, and rituals from various castes and tribes. These varied civilisations have given rise to a Sikkimese culture that encompasses all aspects of life. But it has also managed to keep its distinction. This is evident in their continual celebrations of festivals, a wide range of houses of worship and cultural dances.
Also, if you plan to visit Sikkim, do not forget to catch the ceremonial mask dance performances. They are performed with more zeal and gusto by the monks. They jig to the rumbling drums and braying horns, as their swords and dazzling jewels add even more realism to the spectacle.
Sikkim’s spirits elude mountains, rivers and forests. According to Sikkimese culture, nature is worshipped as God. One such celebration among the villagers to express their gratitude towards Mount Khangchendzonga, is the Phang Labsol festival. And this Yama Jatra is considered a strong state guard.
Another holiday is the Desian festival, which is a celebration of good conquering evil, according to the state. Since Diwali falls on the tenth day, this festival is similar to Dussehra.
An auspicious Kagyat dance is performed yearly, too. Apart from these, Sikkimese celebrate Losoong, Namoong, Labab Duchen, Yuma-Sam-Manghim, Tendong-Iho-Rum-Fat, etc.
The indigenous people of Sikkim (the Lepchas) were the earliest inhabitants of that region, preceding even the Bhutias and Nepalese who arrived after the Lepchas. Lepchas settlements with spirit based bone faith based on bone.
So when we talk about Sikkim's natives, we cannot forget the Lepchas who had been living there before the arrival of Bhutias and Nepalese. The bones held by the spirit-based faith are used by early Lepcha settlers.
Hence, mountain, river and forest become the nature finds its spirit of Sikkim. So it is with many of Lepcha folklore. The confluence of the Lachen and Lachung rivers falls under the Lepcha territory, a region in the middle of the state.
The Tibetans came to Sikkim these days are called as Bhutia. They live in the north of Sikkim and have a Bhutia house known as a "Khin," with a typically rectangular shape.
From the Lepchas and Bhutias came the latter, the two sects of Nepalese people who eventually arrived in Sikkim. The sect moved en masse and swiftly became the dominant group. In reality, they now account for more than 80% of the entire population.
That way when you visit, you will know the kinds of people and cultures that the state values. Everyone there is nice and friendly; the Lepchas, Bhutias, the Nepalese, you name it, are very sociable, thus you may also join the locals to the festivities as well.
