Lachen A Perfect Travel Destination

Home Lachen A Perfect Travel Destination

Lachen and Lachung are the most important parts of a North Sikkim trip. Lachen and Lacnhung are two cities for visitors and where they start for Gurudongmar Lake, Chopta Valley, Yumthang Valley, and Zero Point.

And North Sikkim is one of those places; it challenges our definitions of beauty in several ways. Some of us like rocky mountainous areas but most of us enjoy the soft green hills and some of us are even fascinated by the incredible flowers blooming out in the wild.

So these and more, you can find in North Sikkim. Spread across different altitudes, a trip to North Sikkim will ensure that you witness a plethora of everything that Nature has given to us, human beings.

The poet in us loves the above, but the accountant is rolling his eyes at the fact that the budget may yet be stretched a little too thin.

And here’s the great news! North Sikkim is very cost-effective as compared to other hilly places like- Mussoorie, Nainital, Manali, Jammu & Kashmir, Dharamshala, etc. And, if you time your trip right, you just may witness freshly fallen snow that will leave everlasting memories in your soul.

North Sikkim is also a photographer's delight. There are soooo many bright colours, unique textures and fun sights to snap! So your camera will be your best travel friend on this trip! In this article, we will discuss Lachung and Lachen in particular but with some other important points as well.

Lachung

It is Lachung’s identical twin, and both villages are bases to excursions to Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley. 8,838 feet above sea level, in that vicinity. You can drive for around 6-7 hours along the North Sikkim highway from Gangtok to get to this place.

Be prepared for a bumpy ride down the winding roads past the last of Gangtok.

For most people, the car is the most widely available means of travel. There are three major places that you must visit on the way from Gangtok to here. These include Phodong, Mangan, and Chunthang. The route branches into two from Chungthang. The road on the left leads to the city 26 km away from Chungthang.

It turns right and makes for Lachung. The road ahead may be difficult, dependent upon the weather, but we gotta keep moving forward. Buckle up for a roller coaster ride.

As you travel from Gangtok you will be able to behold the winding Teesta River. The river’s colours vary from sapphire blue to emerald green, depending on the shade of the sky at various times of the course. You will most probably stop first at Tingchim.

Lachen

THIS STRIKING AREA WILL INSTANTLY SEEM BY ITSELF IN YOUR WORLD. The calmness thereof is unmatched, and the people will greet you in such a way that the bones inside you get warmed up despite the cold outside.

If you go in the summer when the temperature is at its hottest, it may come as a shock to you to see the locals’ attire, as folks are accustomed to freezing cold, and the last thing on their mind.

Lachen sits at 2,750 metres (9,000 feet) altitude.

9,000 feet above sea level, and the name “Lachen” originally translates to “Big Pass.”

It is mainly a grassland valley with patches of conifer and rhododendron trees. Lachen Chu, a high-velocity mountain torrent, thunders through the settlement and cuts across the middle of the valley, slicing down steep canyons en route. In contrast, peaks white with snow and tall pines border the valley across the valley.

Mountainous terrain and regular land sliding on roads, particularly during the monsoon season, necessitates the frequent repair and maintenance of roads in the city. Nevertheless, the village remains looking as picturesque as it ever did. There are just 250 homes in the village, and in summer residents head to the valleys to escape the brutal weather.
