A shrine like no other, the Baba Harbhajan Singh shrine pays tribute to bravery and sacrifice, not a particular religion. India's public servant and soldier Baba Harbhajan Singh, popularly known as Hero of Nathula, Breathing, and Walking Soldier. This is because he sacrificed his life in the tender age of 26. His bravery and heroism later earned him the Maha Vir Chakra in September 1967.

As per the myth of Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, when a glacier drowns Baba Harbhajan Singh while trying to lead a column of mules carrying supplies. Soon after, some soldiers set out to look for him. His body was found three days later. According to reports, another few guys helped Harbhajan Singh find his body. He once asked a colleague to build a shrine to him.

 

Harbhajan Singh would walk up to the team three days before launching an attack. At the flag meeting with the Chinese, he even received a special level of respect there and a special chair was reserved for him by the Chinese. Every month, soldiers at Nathula save money in his name and give it to his mother.

The Temple Structure

 

Over the years the memorial has become a pilgrimage site. Inside the temple, devotees worship a large image of Harbajan Singh. We will see many people leaving behind water bottles that will be collected later. They believe it will be lucky for them if they drink this water. The passing army trucks also stop and pay respect.

 

The Office

 

A purpose-built office on site is believed to be where Harbajan Singh conducts his daily business. Inside, there is an eating area, a bed, his shoes, his uniform.

Best Time To Visit Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple In Sikkim: The best season to visit Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple is between April to November. The weather is still pleasant in these months so you can pay your respects to the soldier Harbhajan Singh comfortably.

 

The Nathula Pass remains closed during the winter season due to heavy snowfall and hence, the Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple cannot be visited.

 

There is no fee to enter Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple.

 

How to get to Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple

The temple is located on the famous Nathula Pass, 60 km from Gangtok in Sikkim. Private or shared vehicle is available to visit Baba Harbhajan Singh temple. Local jeeps are also available to reach the temple.

 

Since Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple is near to the Indo-China border, you need to take a Protected Area Permit for visiting.
